Below is the common formula many doctors use to calculate how much protein you need. For those with extensive kidney damage, your doctor may limit you to an even lower amount.
Step 1: Use the charts below to look up your ideal body weight - not how much you weigh today. To determine your frame size wrap your longest finger and your thumb around your wrist. If they almost touch, you are a LARGE frame. If they just touch, you are a MEDIUM frame. If they overlap you are a SMALL frame.
Step 2: Divide your ideal body weight by 2.2 to convert it to kilograms.
Step 3: Multiply your ideal body weight in kilograms x 0.8 to get how much protein you should target per day.
Protein calculation example:
My ideal body weight is 170 lbs (6' tall male, medium frame).
Convert to Kilograms: 170 / 2.2 = 77 kg
Calculate protein: 77 kg x 0.8 = 61 g protein per day
