Episode 2: Kidney Disease Diet: What a kidney dietitian should have told you BUT DIDN'T! When you get diagnosed with Kidney disease you are told you need a kidney disease diet (renal diet) to manage your CKD. Most are referred to a kidney dietitian or renal dietitian to help plan your Kidney Disease diet. And chances are, the kidney dietitian was little IF ANY help to you. As a matter of fact, my first SEVERAL dietitians gave me absolutely nothing useful for my kidney disease diet plan. You expect to learn what to eat in order to lower your creatinine and increase your GFR, but that isn't exactly what they provide. It is important to know foods that make your kidneys healthy, foods to avoid, and have a full diet plan so that you can avoid kidney failure.

Getting diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease is a Life-Altering Event, and I was ready to make the changes needed to increase my GFR and improve my kidney health. Like so many of you, I had to start doing my own research on what to eat and what not to eat. The kidney dietitians tell you a lot about what not to eat and very little about what foods you can eat on a kidney disease diet. Searching the Internet gave contradictory answers and a lot of people, including doctors, keep repeating the same basic kidney disease diet guidelines. It took a lot of effort, but after emailing and calling researchers and doctors all around the world, I was able to find dietitians who gave real advice – those with patients who were seeing their Kidney function improve! To truly fight kidney disease, you need a kidney disease diet specific to you.
