Coronavirus Prevention Tips for Chronic Kidney Disease Patients and those on Dialysis

2020-03-06

Episode 63: Coronavirus Prevention Tips for Chronic Kidney Disease Patients and those on Dialysis. The Coronavirus COVID-19 is a rapidly developing outbreak and your best source for information is going to be healthcare professionals and the CDC Coronavirus prevention website.

There is currently no vaccine to prevent the current coronavirus disease. The best Coronavirus prevention is to avoid being exposed to the Covid-19 virus. Doctors and the CDC recommend following everyday preventive actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory diseases like the Coronavirus and to lower your risk of exposure. Recommended Coronavirus Prevention tips for kidney patients include:

1. Stay home if you feel sick or have any Coronavirus or Flu symptoms (such as fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills). Seek medical advice if your symptoms are serious, you have difficulty breathing, or are concerned. DO NOT skip dialysis treatment – call your doctor and dialysis center for instructions.
2. Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue, then throw it in the trash can. If you don't have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve, not your hands.
3. Avoid others who are sick. Limit face-to-face contact with others as much as possible. Keep at least 6 feet between you and anyone coughing or sneezing.
4. Skip the handshake: Try an elbow bump, head nod, or air fist bump.
5. Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds; especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. If you don’t have soap and water, use hand sanitizer with 60-95% alcohol.
6. Avoid touching your face: This includes your eyes, nose, and mouth – known as the T-Zone.
7. Avoid touching surfaces unnecessarily: Think about using your knuckles instead of your fingertips for pushing buttons and use paper towels or tissue for opening doors after washing your hands.
8. Routinely clean & disinfect frequently touched surfaces and objects.
9. Stay health focused Get plenty of rest and sleep, eat a nutritious and balanced diet, stay hydrated, and get regular exercise. Not only is this great for improving your body’s immune system, but it also helps deal with anxiety.
10. Share these tips with your family so that everyone is taking steps to reduce their exposure.
If there is a Coronavirus outbreak in your area, you may want to reduce your risk further by not going out unless necessary. If you can, work from home. It’s always wise to stock up on shelf-stable foods, along with water and 2-3 weeks’ worth of prescriptions. Download Dadvice TV’s free food guide from www.DadviceTV.com/food
As kidney patients, we always need to be following best practices to avoid getting sick. As with any medical situation, your best source for information is going to be healthcare professionals and the CDC or your local version of the Centers for Disease Control for those living outside the United States.
