Protein and Kidney Disease go together like PB&J - it is difficult to think of one without thinking of the other. There is both good protein and bad protein for your body when you have Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and are on a Kidney Disease diet (Renal Diet) you have to take precautions with protein and kidney disease. Most American's consume a high sugar, dairy, and meat diet. This animal protein puts a lot of stress on the kidneys and speeds up kidney failure. Whereas plant-based protein doesn't put stress on your kidneys and can actually help your kidneys to heal and regain functionality, improving your GFR. I also eat non-soy-based plant protein. Soy may cause bloating and water retention in some people, which is not good for those with Chronic Kidney Disease. To make it easy, search for Vegan food at your grocery store. There are lots of great vegan options that will provide your body with the protein it needs without putting extra stress on your kidneys.
