Can you cure CKD, repair kidney damage from kidney disease, reverse kidney failure, or heal kidneys

Episode 82: Can you cure CKD, repair kidney damage from kidney disease, reverse kidney failure, or heal kidneys. Each day I'm asked if you can cure CKD, restore kidneys, repair kidney damage, or reverse kidney failure. Many people hear of my success in improving my health, they see my labs improving, and they assume there is a cure for CKD (chronic kidney disease). Top that with websites selling tablets with exotic ingredients that promise to completely restore your kidney function – it’s easy to see why people wonder if you can cure kidney disease and reverse kidney damage.

Let’s start with some groundwork
• I am not a doctor. I have NO medical training.
• I am a kidney patient. I was diagnosed with Stage 5 kidney failure and told I had no chance of getting better and I needed dialysis.
• As you can see, I’m a super nerd and I pretty much science the heck out of possible alternatives to dialysis. I NEVER went on dialysis.
• I worked closely with my entire health care team – of which a key player was renal dietitians.
• Today, 1.5 years later, I am Stage 3 and have NO symptoms.
• Are my kidneys less damaged today than when I collapsed outside the ER with kidney failure? NO – they are just as damaged. There is currently no way to repair the physical damage to your kidneys. The damage I have will be with me for the rest of my life.

Now some may be confused – my kidneys are just as damaged today with a GFR of 33 as they were with a GFR of 8 – how is that possible? GFR Does NOT measure kidney damage. It measures how well your kidneys are removing waste products, most commonly creatinine, from your bloodstream.

There is currently NO WAY to cure or repair the physical damage to your kidneys. The scar tissue, the damaged nephrons (the filters), and any other damage cannot be undone, cured, or restored. With current medical science, THERE IS NO CURE.

I know – you want there to be one – so do I. And yes, I’ve read thousands of articles about results from different small studies showing some potential in improving kidney health. But none of them repair the physical damage. Not even the fake hacks like baking soda kidney repair.

So how is my GFR so much higher and my symptoms all gone in just a year and a half? This is where you CAN make a difference. I have made simple lifestyle changes, I learned about nutrition from professionals, I based my diet on my labs. In short – I am putting less burden on my kidneys, which allows them to better keep up with me. I’m giving my body the sodium it needs, but not too much. I’m giving it the potassium it needs, but not too much. I’m doing this for all the nutrients that matter. It sounds hard, but it isn’t when you work with a renal dietitian.

Can you improve your labs this way? Most likely – but we are all different. I had to make lifestyle changes to manage my underlying cause of kidney disease and prevent further damage to my kidneys. I would say there is also some luck involved. But the key takeaway is that while you CAN NOT cure kidney disease (and nobody on the plant has a cure – believe ME), you may be able to slow down or stop the progression. And with a little luck, you can also improve your labs and better manage or even eliminate symptoms.

So, when you see someone offering a kidney cure, kidney restore, kidney fix, kidney what-ever, pass. Even if they claim their brother was given a special tea to drink and their kidneys healed back to perfect health – it’s not true. Spend your time managing your underlying condition and learning about nutrition and health. Then work with your health care team and don’t let kidney disease hold you back! You can not cure CKD naturally or otherwise using any pills, supplements, teas, or herbs.
