Kidney Diet Tips: Benefits of Organic food in beating kidney disease and preventing kidney failure

2019-07-28

Episode 48: Kidney Diet Tips: The Benefits of Organic food for beating kidney disease and preventing kidney failure. While most people with chronic kidney disease are never told the kidney diet tips of the importance of choosing organic food for their kidney diet food list, this is something your Kidney Doctor (Nephrologist) and Kidney Diet dietitian should have stressed. By making organic food part of your renal diet for CKD, you will improve your chances of increasing your kidney function and avoid renal failure.

Did you know that some of the fruits and vegetables you eat which you think are healthy and nutritious, are actually covered in kidney damaging toxins! The Environmental Working Group (EWG) recently released their annual guide to the produce containing the most pesticides, aka the Dirty Dozen List. It’s always disappointing to learn how our seemingly nutritious fruits and vegetables can be covered in toxins. EWG REPORTED THAT NEARLY 70 PERCENT OF CONVENTIONAL PRODUCE CONTAINED PESTICIDE RESIDUE. 70 percent! That’s a horrible statistic! What can you do – The first step is to know which foods you should always buy organic.

Good news is organic foods don’t have the pesticides that standard foods may have. Also, genetically modified (GMO) grains are used in some processed foods. Recent research has shown that GMO foods, especially corn, can cause kidney damage. In addition to not having pesticides, organic foods do not have GMOs.

Here is the EWG’s Dirty dozen list for 2019 which you should always buy organic as part of your renal diet meal plan for better kidney function:

1. Apples
2. Celery
3. Cherries
4. Grapes
5. Kale/Collard greens
6. Nectarines
7. Peaches
8. Pears
9. Potatoes
10. Spinach
11. Strawberries
12. Tomatoes

The following list of foods are often loaded with pesticides and GMOs – you should always purchase the organic versions as part of your kidney diet:

• Blueberries
• Cucumbers
• Hot peppers
• Raspberries
• Snap peas
• Sweet bell peppers

Another good way to cut down on pesticides in your produce is by making sure to thoroughly clean them before eating during your renal diet meal prep. I will warn though that simply doing this will not remove all of the toxins from your renal diet meals since some toxins are inside the produce, so it's still important to buy organic whenever possible, or at least when buying items off the list above.
